Nach einem weiteren Tag mit leichtem Wind stellt sich die Frage, ob die Möglichkeit weniger Rennen den Kampf um den Weltmeistertitel möglicherweise noch offener macht.
Die vielversprechende Vorhersage für den zweiten Tag des Fly! ANA Yokosuka, Miura Windsurf World Cup 2025 hat sich leider nicht bewahrheitet, da der Wind den ganzen Vormittag über schwach blieb. Zu einem Zeitpunkt begann zwar Heat 1 der Elimination 1 der Männer – bei nur 5 bis 9 Knoten Wind –, doch musste er aufgrund des fehlenden Windes bald wieder abgebrochen werden. Wie vorhergesagt, kam der Wind auch am Nachmittag nicht zurück, sodass die Fahrer um 14 Uhr entlassen wurden.
The Pressure Cooker Scenario
With Japan only being a five day event this does bring in the major possibility that discards may not simply be a luxury that can be afforded - especially if tomorrow, which offers a promising forecast, were again fail to produce.
With 48 sailors in the Men’s fleet and 18 in the Women’s fleet it’s also going to take considerable time to gain results for each elimination, so getting to at least four eliminations (when the first discard comes into play) in each fleet is certainly no given. For your world title race leaders, Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails) and Justine Lemeteyer (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) this brings added pressure as they are the only sailors with something to lose, while everyone else around them has everything to gain.
Over time, there is certainly a linear relationship between the number of eliminations completed and the top sailors eventually working their way towards the top of the event rankings - even after a slow start. However, the more time that passes here without a race being completed, the more the pressure will steadily increase, and the more a mistake or equipment failure, could flip the world title races on their heads from out of nowhere, the main contenders may not have opportunity to recover.
From a viewers perspective this is great as it offers the potential for an extra element of drama, but you have to feel slightly for the leaders. Particularly Iachino, who has a healthy advantage, as from being in a relatively stress free scenario, to almost anything can happen, really flips the switch. As time continues to tick by the pressure will steadily start to increase, while the margin for error exponentially decreases.
Could this cause some unexpected errors from the front runners? That we will have to wait and see, but the tension is definitely rising in the world title race battles… Who’s your money on for the world titles?
Looking Ahead
Once again the forecast on paper looks promising for Saturday with 13-18 knot winds predicted during the morning. Tomorrow’s forecast is slightly stronger than today’s, which was on the cusp of being raceable, so surely Saturday will see the racing get underway. The world title race leaders will be hoping so at least, so they can quash any nerves that may be starting to brew. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 8am (GMT+9) onwards with the action commencing from 08:30am.
