Tsukuihama is usually a very flat beach, but with Super Typhoon In-fa, which battered the Northern Mariana Islands on Friday pushing some serious swell towards Japan, the water conditions were less than calm with some massive sets bombarding the event HQ, which led to almost all sailors de-rigging their equipment during the afternoon to place it safely on higher ground.
For context the forecast for today was 2.5ft at 15 seconds, while at the beginning of the day the latest prediction for Monday was 5ft at 15 seconds. However, since then the swell has been degraded with In-fa weakening to a category two typhoon as it approaches Japan's Ogasawara Islands and is expected to weaken further at it heads north. The latest forecast has been degraded slightly, but it’ll be interesting to see how much swell greets competitors come the morning.
In terms of wind, it looks as though we should see the racing get underway with anywhere from 12-25 knot southwesterly winds expected throughout the day. The sailors will meet again at 8am (GMT+9) on Monday morning with the action commencing from 08:30 onwards.
